Learn when the California DMV requires a VIN verification and how a licensed mobile VIN verifier can help with eligible vehicle inspections.
California DMV requires VIN verification in certain registration situations, particularly when a vehicle was previously registered outside California or its identifying information needs confirmation.
A VIN verification helps establish that the vehicle being registered matches the information submitted to DMV.
Common Reasons a VIN Verification Is Required
According to the California DMV, vehicle verification is required in situations that include:
Registering a vehicle last registered in another state, subject to applicable exceptions
Registering a vehicle for which DMV has no record, with certain exceptions
Resolving differences between identifying numbers on the vehicle and DMV records
Recording certain engine or identification-number changes
Registering certain salvage or specially constructed vehicles
Importantly, the fact that DMV requires a verification does not automatically mean a private verifier is authorized to perform it.
Can a Private VIN Verifier Complete the Inspection?
Licensed California vehicle verifiers can inspect many ordinary passenger vehicles, trucks, trailers, RVs, and commercial vehicles.
However, revived salvage, revived junk, specially constructed vehicles, and some other cases cannot be handled by a private licensed verifier. These may require DMV or CHP inspection.
What Should You Bring?
Before your appointment, prepare your current title or registration, any DMV paperwork, and access to the vehicle's identification areas.
